There are several important aids that promote healthy gums and teeth throughout orthodontic treatment. Dr. Wilkinson feels that the ideal smile is comprised of both healthy gums and straight teeth. To assist with plaque control, she recommends the Rotadent.
The Rotatdent electric interproximal plaque remover is used as an adjunct to daily tooth brushing. Patients who find flossing difficult can achieve, with minimal effort, excellent plaque control with the Rotadent.
Proxa brushes and floss threaders are also very helpful interdental aids for patients wearing braces. They are manually placed between the teeth and used to remove food particles and plaque. Occasionally, as your teeth level and align, spaces are created. The proxa brush is a great tool to deal with temporary food impaction during treatment.
Topical Fluoride (Phos-Flur) is a sodium fluoride gel that helps prevent tooth decay while you are in braces. It kills bacteria and replaces minerals in enamel that have been exposed to harmful acids. It is used in addition to your brushing and flossing routine at bedtime. Brush with Phos-Flur for one minute, then spit it out. You may not eat or drink for 30 minutes afterward. Do not rinse it away, it must stay on the teeth for the prescribed 30 minutes.
